Romanian high court rejects Georgescu’s appeal on election annulment
The Romanian High Court of Cassation and Justice has definitively rejected the appeal filed by Călin Georgescu and the Coalition for the Defense of the Rule of Law, which challenged the Bucharest Court of Appeal’s decision to uphold the annulment of the 2024 presidential elections.
Călin Georgescu had received an unfavorable ruling from the Bucharest Court of Appeal on December 31, 2024, and subsequently filed an appeal, which was rejected by the Supreme Court on Friday.
The Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the 2024 presidential elections, in which Călin Georgescu was the winner, citing serious irregularities.
Declassified documents from Romania’s Supreme Council of National Defense revealed that Georgescu reported zero campaign expenses, even though both the Romanian Intelligence Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs indicated that he had received one million euros in funding through Bogdan Peșchir for TikTok promotion.
Additionally, intelligence agencies reported cyberattacks and Russian hybrid influences intended to support Eurosceptic candidates and destabilize Romania’s pro-European agenda.
