Dorin Recean at the meeting with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees: We will take care of the Ukrainians who stay in our country

The meeting between Prime Minister Dorin Recean, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the United Nations Resident Coordinator in the Republic of Moldova, Yasim Oruc, focused on the Republic of Moldova's role in addressing regional challenges. They also discussed the government's efforts to provide long-term protection for individuals who have fled the war in Ukraine.

"Together, we have succeeded in creating the necessary mechanisms for the protection and socioeconomic inclusion of refugees. We are grateful to UNHCR and proud of the people of Moldova, who have actively participated in assisting. We will continue to support the over 135,000 Ukrainians who have chosen to stay in our country and ensure their comfort," stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

According to a government statement, discussions also highlighted how refugee integration aligns with the "European Moldova 2030" strategy. Officials noted that refugees contribute valuable entrepreneurial skills and help address labor shortages in critical sectors, thereby strengthening the inclusive development of the Republic of Moldova and its goals for integration into the European Union.

The parties also discussed Moldova's role in the reconstruction of Ukraine.

It is important to mention that the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, is scheduled to visit the Republic of Moldova on January 17-18. This will mark his fourth official visit to the country.
