Israel to release 90 Palestinian prisoners in ceasefire deal
Israel has announced the release of 90 Palestinian prisoners from its prisons as part of a ceasefire agreement with the Hamas group in the Gaza Strip.
The Israeli Prison Service has labeled them as terrorists, according to a Reuters report from Monday night to Tuesday, January 20. This information was also confirmed by AFP journalists.
According to them, two buses left the Ofer military prison, located in the West Bank.
According to The Times of Israel, 78 residents of the West Bank and 12 residents of East Jerusalem were released. Among them are 69 women, one minor, 8 boys, and 12 men, all convicted of relatively minor offenses.
Hamas has released three Israeli hostages
A few hours earlier, the radical Palestinian movement released three Israeli hostages: Romy Gonen, 24; Emily Damari, 28; and Doron Steinbrecher, 31. They were handed over to the International Committee of the Red Cross as part of the first phase of an agreement between the conflicting parties, according to DW.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the released individuals, accompanied by soldiers and security forces, were transported to Israel and are awaiting medical examination.
236 Palestinian prisoners will immediately be transferred to other countries
According to the terms of the agreement between Israel and Hamas, 737 Palestinian prisoners will be released in the first phase. Of these, 296 are serving life sentences. Meanwhile, AFP specifies that 236 Palestinians will immediately be transferred to third countries, mainly Qatar or Turkey, after their release.
