Moldova urged to deepen ties with the US for economic growth
The Republic of Moldova needs to deepen its diplomatic and economic relations with the United States of America (USA), stated Zugimantas Pavilionis, Vice Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Lithuanian Seimas, during the "Diplomatic Dimension" program on Moldova 1.
The official emphasized the need to appoint a professional ambassador to Washington and to attract American investments to the Republic of Moldova.
The United States bases its foreign policy priorities on four fundamental pillars: economic interests, democracy, isolationist policy, and military strength, Pavilionis explained. According to the Lithuanian official, the Republic of Moldova must take all necessary steps to attract American investments, thereby strengthening bilateral economic ties.
"Every effort must be made to attract American companies to the Republic of Moldova and foster economic interest. It is essential to recognize that economic interests are crucial—not just ideology and democracy. Secondly, it’s about democracy. While you already have it, it needs to be strengthened—not just for the ruling party, but through unity among all political forces. This unity, though challenging, is necessary for advancing EU integration.
The third tradition involves American isolationist interests and military strength. From an American perspective, you lack these components and need to be aware of this. Moldova’s stance of neutrality is, in the American view, perceived as a losing strategy."
When asked about potential global changes, especially in Europe, following Donald Trump’s inauguration, considering his prior statements, Pavilionis remarked, "The important thing is not to interpret his statements literally."
"Europeans’ greatest mistake is interpreting America through their European lens. Many assume Americans are similar to us, but they are not. The United States is a different country with distinct traditions, and we need to understand this first and foremost. I would also stress the importance of having the most competent and professional ambassador in Washington, who must ensure that President Maia Sandu gains swift access to the White House. This is especially critical given Trump’s unpredictable nature."
It is worth noting that Donald Trump, 78 years old, is set to be inaugurated today as President of the United States. Trump is entering his second term, and over 200,000 people are expected to attend the inauguration ceremony.
