Moldova seeks U.S. support for Transnistrian conflict resolution
Shifts in U.S. foreign policy and possible peace negotiations with Ukraine could present an opportunity for Moldova to secure American support in resolving the Transnistrian conflict.
Amid the reset in international relations, Black Sea expert Mihai Isac emphasized on Moldova 1 the importance of Chisinau's engagement in discussions on regional security.
"The United States supports Moldova, and a shift in the Trump administration's approach could present a crucial opportunity for Chisinau to bring the 'Transnistrian file' and the region's status back to the negotiating table," Isac stated.
"It is crucial that Moldova is included in these negotiations, as decisions about Ukraine could significantly affect our stability. Moldova must leverage this international context, with support from external partners, including Romania, to request deeper U.S. involvement in resolving this issue."
In the context of international changes, Isac also emphasized the importance of support from external partners. "A national strategy is needed to reintegrate the region into the constitutional framework, and it is the role of Chisinau authorities to present this to partners using the same diplomacy they applied in their relationship with the EU."
"We should also explore this type of diplomacy across the ocean. This is an opportunity granted by the Trump administration."
Security expert Pavel Horea states that the White House will need to adjust its strategy in negotiations with Russia and Ukraine to reach a durable compromise.
"Trump promised to end the conflict within 24 hours, immediately after his inauguration. Then, he estimated a possible resolution within six months, and now—100 days seems to be a plausible timeframe," Isac said.
"They likely understood that this is a complex system with two sides unwilling to make concessions. On one hand, Ukraine is defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while on the other, Russia, under Putin and the Kremlin, is pursuing its own ambitions and objectives."
