BREAKING NEWS! The Republic of Moldova will not participate in Eurovision 2025

The Republic of Moldova has decided to withdraw from the Eurovision 2025 music contest. This announcement was made by Corneliu Durnescu, the director of the national television channel Moldova 1, and Daniela Crudu, the head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, on January 22. The decision came after a thorough analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative, and artistic challenges involved. Despite withdrawing from the contest, Moldova 1 TV will still broadcast live the two semi-finals and the grand final in Basel, allowing viewers to follow the competition in the best possible way.

“The decision was not an easy one, but it was necessary given the current context. This year’s national selection for Eurovision highlighted several challenges, including a decline in public interest and a decrease in the overall quality of the songs and performances. This situation has fostered a negative perception among both specialists and the public, emphasizing the need for significant reform in the selection process,” said Corneliu Durnescu, the director of Moldova 1 TV.

He noted that the Public Broadcaster intends to review the selection criteria and methodology to encourage broader participation from talented artists and to ensure a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international stage.

“We consulted with specialists in the music field, and most expressed serious concerns about Moldova’s participation this year, aligning with the opinions of the jury chosen by TRM for this edition. We respect the views of professionals and the general public, and we recognize that we must make responsible decisions,” Durnescu said.

According to him, participating in the Eurovision competition involves considerable costs, including organizing the national final, production expenses, artist promotion, travel and accommodation for the team, stage production, technical equipment, and other related expenses. The participation fee communicated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is 21,486 euros, not 176,000 euros, Durnescu emphasized.

"The Public Broadcaster is open to providing any necessary information. We have committed to transparency, and Eurovision is no exception. At the same time, we cannot allow public opinion to be misled by false or malicious narratives."

Durnescu pointed that TRM will reallocate the resources planned for this year’s Eurovision participation to other projects.

"This decision was not easy, but we assure you that it was carefully analyzed. We know that everyone would have liked to hold a national final and choose the song to represent us on the international stage. However, we firmly believe that this decision will generate increased interest in future editions. We are committed to coming back strong for Eurovision, supporting individuals who aspire to reach the big stages and providing them with the opportunity to prepare better,” said Daniela Crudu, head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation.

To remind you, after the live auditions on January 18, 12 artists and bands qualified for the national final of Eurovision 2025. This year, the Republic of Moldova would have participated in the ESC for the 20th time.
