Moldova boosts energy subsidies for refugees and vulnerable households

Ukrainian refugees and vulnerable households in the Republic of Moldova will receive higher energy subsidies during the winter season to address rising tariffs.

A new addendum to the Memorandum of Understanding, signed by the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection and People in Need Moldova, establishes this support, financed by the European Union.

According to the Ministry of Labour and Social Protection, this initiative seeks to support vulnerable groups during the winter by partially offsetting the increased cost of living caused by the energy crisis. To achieve this, funds allocated by People in Need and the European Union will be utilized.

The total budget for the support program is €700,000, which will be distributed as direct subsidies to the identified beneficiary groups.

As of December 1, household consumers have been paying 16.74 MDL (0,86 euro) per cubic meter of natural gas (VAT included), which is 3.62 MDL higher than the previous tariff.

From January 10, electricity bills increased further. Consumers in central and southern regions now pay 4.1 MDL/kWh, a 75% increase, while residents in the northern region pay 4.68 MDL/kWh, an approximate 64% hike.

This year, the government continues offering energy subsidies to households and businesses to mitigate the impact of higher tariffs.
