Moldova rejects Russia's energy crisis accusations

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) of Moldova dismisses accusations made by the Russian Federation’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, alleging that Chișinău is avoiding addressing the energy crisis in Transnistria.

The MFA considers these statements to be "baseless and unjustified" and highlights that the energy crisis in Transnistria results from Gazprom’s failure to meet its contractual obligations to supply natural gas to the Republic of Moldova under the agreement valid through 2026.

"We emphasize that the critical energy situation in the Transnistrian region stems from Gazprom’s decision to not fulfill its commercial commitments to supply natural gas to the Republic of Moldova under the valid 2026 contract. Once again, the Russian Federation is leveraging energy resources as a political instrument to destabilize our country," the MFA stated.

The MFA further notes that such statements from Russia are unconstructive and undermine efforts to foster stability and security in the region. It urges Russia to refrain from provocative rhetoric and contribute to a peaceful dialogue.

"The Republic of Moldova reaffirms its steadfast commitment to upholding international law and safeguarding the interests of its citizens, including those in Transnistria, as stipulated by the Constitution," the MFA added.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov claimed that Moldova is openly avoiding addressing gas-related issues in Transnistria, which, he asserted, stem from Moldova’s own actions. He further stated that Russia would respond appropriately to any provocations and guarantee the protection of Russian citizens in Transnistria.
