Green energy in Flâmanzeni, with EU support. School hasn’t paid electricity bill for eight months

The "Iurie Boghiu" Gymnasium in Flâmanzeni, located in the Singerei district, has not paid its electricity bill for eight months, thanks to a European Union-funded energy efficiency project. As schools in the Republic of Moldova struggle to cope with rising electricity costs, this gymnasium has successfully reduced its consumption by rehabilitating its heating system and installing solar panels.

"We not only managed to lower our electricity consumption but also foster ecological responsibility within the community. With this project implemented in our school, we have achieved significant savings on electricity. Since May, thanks to the photovoltaic panels, we haven't had to pay for electricity until December", said Lilia Cumpăta, the director of the "Iurie Boghiu" Gymnasium. The gymnasium accommodates approximately 300 students. The project, financed by the European Union, involved rehabilitating the roof, insulating the building's walls, replacing windows, and renovating bathrooms. Both students and teachers observed a positive change in their learning environment:

"I can't say it was very cold; we weren't wearing thick clothes to class, but you can feel the difference in heat now compared to before. Classes are now a pleasure; it's always warm and brighter in the classrooms," said a student.

"It’s very warm and comfortable; I like it a lot", said a student.

Daniela Ungureanu, a teacher working at the institution for a year, expressed her satisfaction with the improved conditions: "As a parent of two children studying here, I am thrilled that they benefit from such improvements."

The project, titled “Increasing the Energy Efficiency of the ‘Iurie Boghiu’ Gymnasium in Flâmanzeni” cost 16.94 million lei to construct.
