Maia Sandu will attend the ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau camp

Moldovan President Maia Sandu will participate on January 27 in the ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. The event, organized at the Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum, will bring together over 30 world leaders to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust.

According to a press release from the Presidency, the program includes testimonies of Holocaust survivors, who will share the horrors they lived through to keep alive the memory of the past and promote lessons for humanity.

"Through her presence, President Maia Sandu will reaffirm Moldova's commitment to preserve the memory of the Holocaust, promote human rights, mutual respect and peace", reads the source.

The Auschwitz-Birkenau camp was the largest concentration and extermination camp complex built by the Nazi regime, where more than one million people lost their lives. The overwhelming majority of the victims were Jews, but Poles, Roma and people of other nationalities were among those exterminated.

Today, Auschwitz remains a symbol of the Holocaust and the atrocities committed by the Nazis during World War II. January 27 was designated International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the UN in 2005.

In Chisinau, the day will be marked by an event commemorating the victims of the Holocaust, which will be attended by the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu, and other officials.
