80 years since the liberation of Auschwitz: Maia Sandu - "Let us build a better world, where there no place for hate"
The President of the Republic of Moldova, Maia Sandu, alongside 30 other world leaders, is participating today in the commemoration ceremony of the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp. In a message posted on social media, Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of preserving the memory of the Holocaust and promoting peace.
"At Auschwitz-Birkenau, I felt the weight of history and our duty to the future. I stepped into a place where over a million lives were cut short due to hatred and a lack of humanity. On the 80th anniversary of the liberation of this camp of horrors, let us not allow these dreadful things to be forgotten or denied. Let us promote tolerance, respect, and care for those around us. Let us build a better world where hatred has no place. Today, more than ever, we must be united against hatred and work for peace. That is the legacy we must leave for future generations," wrote Maia Sandu.
The ceremony at Auschwitz-Birkenau includes testimonies from Holocaust survivors who share their stories, reminding future generations of the horrors of this tragic episode in human history.
Also, a commemoration event for the victims of the Holocaust is taking place in Chișinău, with the participation of the Parliament Speaker, Igor Grosu. Moldovan officials reaffirm the country's commitment to preserving the memory.
What was Auschwitz-Birkenau?
Auschwitz-Birkenau, located in Nazi-occupied Poland, was the largest concentration and extermination camp during World War II. Between 1940 and 1945, over 1.1 million people, mostly Jews, were killed here. The camp became a symbol of the Holocaust, a period during which over 6 million Jews and millions of others from various ethnic, political, and social groups were murdered by the Nazi regime.
We remind you that the United Nations designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day in 2005.
