Italy’s 10M euro grant to Moldova boosts energy efficiency and smart metering

The Republic of Moldova will receive a non-repayable grant of 10 million euros to promote energy efficiency through the installation of smart meters, digitizing the energy sector, and enhancing social protection.

This grant is provided by Italy through the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and complements the 10 million euros allocated in November 2023.

The funds from Italy will be used to expand the ongoing pilot program for installing smart meters. By the end of this year, 35,000 meters will be installed, with another 25,000 devices scheduled for installation in 2026.

Smart metering encourages consumers to use electricity during off-peak periods when energy is cheaper, and the grid load is lower. In this way, the initiative helps balance energy consumption throughout the day and reduces pressure on the grid during peak hours.

Additionally, a unified National Consumption Register will be created, facilitating data exchange between suppliers, distributors, and consumers to streamline information management in the energy sector. Similarly, a unique platform, "eSocial," will be developed, integrating all available social protection programs and enabling users to access them through a single online portal.
