Ursula von der Leyen: EU will help Moldova decouple from Russia in energy terms

The European Union will support the Republic of Moldova in integrating into the EU energy market and will eliminate any dependence on Russia. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a message on the x platform on Tuesday that Moscow is using energy as a tool of blackmail, as it has done in its relationship with the European Union.

“Our comprehensive strategy for Moldova will put an end to this situation. We will support Moldova in its immediate needs. And we will offer it full integration into the EU energy market, decoupling it from Russia,” wrote Ursula von der Leyen.

The statement comes in the context of the European Commission and the Republic of Moldova agreeing on a two-year comprehensive strategy for energy independence and increased resilience. As part of this plan, Chisinau will benefit from a new financial package worth 250 million euros, announced today by the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, who is in Chisinau alongside President Maia Sandu. Also, the European Union proposes to allocate 60 million euros for the Transnistrian region, money intended to cover energy needs. However, the financing will be conditional, said the European official.
