Moldova's government offers EU-funded electricity compensation

The government of the Republic of Moldova is developing a mechanism for providing electricity compensation, funded by the European Union.

Every family in Moldova will receive this support by the end of the year, regardless of whether they are registered on the government’s compensations platform, compensatii.gov.md.

All citizens will receive compensation for electricity until December 2025.

Moldovans appreciate the EU’s support in offsetting the rise in electricity tariffs. However, some believe that the assistance should be directed only to those in need.

EU support for the Transnistrian region is contingent on the respect for human rights, according to experts.

According to the minister, approximately 700,000 families in the Republic of Moldova are part of the compensation system and will receive support to cover the increased heating and electricity costs. These households will also receive compensation in February and March.

Additionally, all families in the Republic of Moldova will receive support to pay electricity bills until the end of 2025, whether or not they are included in the compensation system. For January, electricity compensation will only be provided to those who have registered for the program.

“We are currently clarifying these technical aspects within the government. Until now, our efforts have primarily focused on discussions with European partners to secure this support. We’ve secured it, now we need to determine how to distribute it to all families in the Republic of Moldova,” said Alexei Buzu.

It should be noted that, with the support of the European Union, the Government of the Republic of Moldova will provide electricity compensation to all families in the country until December 2025. The Prime Minister announced that each household will pay the first 110 kWh of their electricity bill at the pre-increase rate, i.e., 2.34 lei (0,12 euro).

This measure has been well received by citizens, many considering it vital support for reducing their monthly expenses. However, there are differing opinions – some argue that assistance should be directed only to those who truly need it.
