Maia Sandu: "There are people at the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office and the PCCOCS who undermine this state"

At the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office and the PCCOCS there are people who undermine this state; they work in the interests of Șor and neither of these two institutions is doing its job well, said President Maia Sandu in the "Cutia Neagră" show on TV8.

"*I admit that there are people at the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office who undermine this state, I saw that a character left the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office and joined Shor's criminal group without any embarrassment on his face. There are still people who work for these criminal groups, there are people disturbed by the reforms, by the external evaluation and intentionally do not want to do their job well and reach a result. But some people work, but what they do there is not enough," declared Maia Sandu.

The president also said that "a merger of the institutions would allow the Superior Council of Prosecutors to get rid of people who are part of criminal groups".

"I do not want to single out only the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office, because we also have this problem in other institutions, it's just that the Anticorruption Prosecutor's Office is responsible for combating political corruption. Now we see that we have more and more political action from organized crime. There are also problems at the PCCOCS, I am sure that there are people who work against this state. The main characters who serve Plahotniuc, Șor fall under the jurisdiction of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office”, Maia Sandu said.

We remind you that the Minister of Justice proposed, upon the recommendation of the Supreme Security Council, three solutions aimed at strengthening the institutions responsible for combating corruption and organized crime. Among the solutions is the merger of the two specialized prosecutor's offices—the PA and the PCCOCS. Veronica Dragalin said, in a response to Teleradio-Moldova, that the minister's proposal would not be substantiated. A day later, she held a press conference during which she presented the 2024 activity report of the institution she heads. According to the document, last year, the PA would have recorded "historic" results, even though it operated with a record low number of employees.

We remind you that, in reaction, the Prosecutor General's Office drew attention to the fact that any change must aim for an efficient act of justice, based on the real needs of society and aligned with good European practices, and the Superior Council of Prosecutors called for a constructive and professional dialogue between state institutions.

For their part, experts believe that this reform would mean Veronica Dragalin's departure from the system—claims rejected by Minister Veronica Mihailov-Moraru. The official says that the reform must be seen as an "institutional approach, not as a decision related to individuals.".

We remind you in this context that Veronica Dragalin was invested as head of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office in the summer of 2022. Originally from the Republic of Moldova, she grew up, studied, and trained as a prosecutor in the United States of America. Although Dragalin was promoted to the position of head of the PA by PAS, she is now criticized by some exponents of the political party, including representatives of the country's leadership.
