The festival will take place from February 28 to March 8, drawing over a million spectators. Rehearsals at the Sambadrome are free to attend, offering fans a sneak peek at the vibrant spectacle.

Hundreds of Brazilians are caught up in the excitement as the first performances take place before eager tourists. Dressed in dazzling costumes, performers parade through the streets, moving in perfect rhythm. These final rehearsals lead up to the highlight of the event: the Special Group parade on March 2 and 3, where 12 elite samba schools will compete for glory.

“It’s incredible, the greatest experience of my life. This is the most sacred place we have today,” said participant Santiago Nascimento.

The festival kicks off with performances from aspiring samba schools competing for a coveted spot in next year’s Special Group. Each night, six schools take the stage, hoping to earn promotion.

For many, attending the main parade is too expensive, making the rehearsals a unique opportunity to experience the magic of Rio Carnival up close.

“It’s an extraordinary experience, especially for those who can’t afford tickets for the main parade. They come to support the school they love. The atmosphere is incredible,” said Joao Vitor Carlvalho.

The celebrations will reach their peak on March 8 with the Champions’ Parade, where the six highest-ranked samba schools will deliver their grand performances at the Sambadrome, marking the spectacular finale of Brazil’s biggest cultural event.
