Smoking carelessness causes deadly fires in Moldova
Carelessness while smoking caused several fires, leading to the deaths of three individuals, according to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU). The incidents were reported on Sunday, February 9.

One incident occurred at a household in the village of Tarasova, in the Rezina district. The flames spread to an outbuilding covering an area of 18 square meters. During the intervention, firefighters found the partially charred body of the owner, a 57-year-old man, inside.
Another fire erupted in a home in the village of Dumbrăvița, in the Sîngerei district. The flames destroyed several old belongings inside a 10-square-meter room. According to reports, before emergency services arrived, locals had extinguished the flames and removed the body of the 48-year-old owner from the house.
Another incident was reported in a house in Strășeni, where the fire damaged several belongings and the roof, covering a total area of 50 square meters. Three teams of rescuers and firefighters discovered the charred body of a 46-year-old man inside the house.
The circumstances of the incidents will be investigated by law enforcement authorities.
The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations warns citizens that neglecting smoking safety rules can lead to fatal consequences. Rescuers urge people to avoid smoking indoors, especially near combustible or highly flammable materials. Citizens are also urged not to leave lit cigarettes unattended. Cigarettes should be extinguished in an ashtray with water and then discarded in the trash.
According to IGSU data, 228 fires have been reported since the beginning of the year, resulting in 21 deaths.
