Constitutional Court of Romania confirms the vacancy of the position of president. Ilie Bolojan is interim president

On Tuesday, February 11, 2025, the Constitutional Court of Romania (CCR) issued a decision declaring that the position of President of Romania will be vacant as of February 12, 2025, due to the resignation of Klaus Iohannis. Under this decision, the interim presidency will be held by the President of the Senate, Ilie Bolojan, as reported by g4media.ro. The CCR's decision is final and has general binding authority. It has been communicated to both Parliament and the Government and will be published in the Official Gazette of Romania.

Former President Klaus Iohannis announced his resignation on February 10, following the initiation of a suspension procedure by the Opposition in Parliament. Iohannis stated that he made this decision to prevent a political crisis that could impact Romania both domestically and internationally.

What's next?

According to Article 97, par. 2 of the Romanian Constitution, the Government is required to organize elections for a new president within three months of the vacancy in the position.

The election dates have been set for May 4, 2025 (first round) and May 18, 2025 (second round).

Ilie Bolojan will serve as the interim president of Romania, taking on presidential duties until the elections are complete and the new head of state takes office. However, his responsibilities are limited by Article 98 of the Constitution, which states that the interim president cannot dissolve Parliament or initiate referendums.
