Alain Berset: "We see how democracy regresses everywhere, including in Europe. We must adapt if we want a strong democracy"
In November, the Republic of Moldova will assume the presidency of the Council of Europe. One of the main priorities will be to adapt democracy to current realities. While artificial intelligence and social networks are not inherently dangerous, they can become tools of manipulation in the hands of malicious actors. These technologies have the potential to radicalize public discourse, create alternate realities, or isolate individuals within their own information bubbles. This situation ultimately undermines trust in democratic systems. President Maia Sandu welcomed the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset, in Chisinau.

According to Alain Berset, the Council of Europe will propose a new pact for democracy.
“The situation is changing rapidly. With social networks, artificial intelligence, and the polarization of debates, we are facing a new reality worldwide. We can see how democracy is regressing everywhere, including in Europe. We must adapt if we want to maintain a strong democracy. Why do we need democracy? Because it is the only way for people to determine their future according to their own will,” emphasized the Secretary General of the Council of Europe.
The Republic of Moldova is on the front line, as its democracy is under constant pressure from Russia, which employs shadow financing, political corruption, networks of influence, and attempts to bribe the electorate.
“The Republic of Moldova can speak to other countries about the risks to democratic processes based on own experiences, but also about the actions we have taken and have proven effective in preserving our democracy. We have many experiences to share, and I am confident that together we will devise new solutions for the challenges facing democracy globally,” stated President Maia Sandu.
In November, the Republic of Moldova will assume the presidency of the Council of Malta and will hold this position until May of next year. The Council of Europe is the international organization dedicated to defending democracy and includes structures such as the European Court of Human Rights, the Venice Commission, and a parliamentary assembly made up of delegations from national legislatures across the continent. In July, the Republic of Moldova will celebrate 30 years since its accession to the Council of Europe.
