Victims of the Afghan War commemorated in Chisinau

Veterans of the Afghan War were commemorated on Saturday in Chisinau, 36 years after the withdrawal of Soviet troops from the country. The ceremony held at the “Sons of the Fatherland – Holy Memory” Memorial Complex was attended by officials, veterans and relatives of those who fell on the battlefield.

“We come here all year round to remember those who fell there and to meet comrades who remained alive. Today I met with a friend whom I have not seen for 42 years”;

“We remember those who died, they did not live to see these days and we want there to be peace and we do not want our grandchildren to see what we saw. Many memories, not good ones”;

*“We have also built a monument in the district center of Ocnita in memory of the fallen. We have five fallen comrades from the Ocnița district. We are looking for our comrades to meet, we are still talking because we do not have the opportunity to see each other more often”, the veterans reported.

At the commemoration event, I met Tudor Godina, a veteran. Every year he is present to pay tribute to his friend who died on the front.

*“He was mortally wounded three meters from me, during the 1984 operation. May God forgive him. I still have friends and colleagues and I lay a flower to all of them as a sign of remembrance and respect for them”, said Tudor Godina, veteran.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu, together with several state officials, laid flowers at the Memorial Complex "Sons of the Fatherland - Holy Memory". "Our task for those who waited, family members, friends, relatives is to be with them, to remember the fallen, to pray for their souls, and to those who returned, to care for them, respect and honor them every day", said Igor Grosu.

The head of state, Maia Sandu, recalled that over 12 thousand Moldovans were sent to fight in this war, while another 700 Moldovans were wounded in the mountains of Central Asia.

Prime Minister Dorin Recean also paid tribute to the fallen in a post on his Facebook page. He mentioned that the authorities will do everything to ensure that the Republic of Moldova does not fall at the mercy of a state that kills its children in wars.

The Day of Commemoration of those killed in the Afghan war, celebrated on February 15, was established by a Parliamentary Decision in 2011.
