Alexei Navalny commemorated in Chisinau

Former Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny was commemorated in Chisinau today, one year after his death. Several supporters organized a march that started in front of the memorial stone to the victims of the Soviet occupation in the Great National Assembly Square. Later, they went to the Russian Embassy, where they laid flowers and lit candles.

The participants in the march told us that they came to commemorate Navalny for his work.

“Thanks to Navalny, I understood better how corruption works and how you can fight it. I believe that demonstrations about freedom, democracy and the fight against corruption are also necessary in the Republic of Moldova”;

“Let’s show our attitude towards what happened a year ago. The man died in prison. This should not happen, no matter who he is. The authorities must see that the people understand everything that is happening."

“I came here simply for myself and for the child, to show and tell him, although he knows that there are heroes we should admire”;

“Navalny was a man I respected because he was fearless, he had rare qualities for today’s Russia, he was brave and honest. His death is a great shame in the history of Russia,” people said.

We remind you that today events in memory of Navalny were organized around the world. Despite the risk of reprisals from the authorities, thousands of Russians gathered at the Borisovskoye cemetery to pay tribute to the opponent.

We recall that Alexei Navalny died on February 16 in a colony in northern Russia. Three years earlier, he had returned to Russia from Germany, where he had been treated after being poisoned. Upon returning home, the politician was arrested and sentenced to 19 years in prison. Alexei Navalny was buried at the Borisovskoye cemetery in Moscow on March 1.
