What happens after Veronica Dragalin's resignation? Legal Resources Centre of Moldova explains
Veronica Dragalin announced her intention to resign from the position of Chief Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office, so the next step is for the Prosecutor General to appoint an interim, and for the Superior Council of Prosecutors (CSP) to approve or reject this appointment, with the interim lasting until the position is filled through a competition. This was announced by the Legal Resources Centre of Moldova (CRJM), which explained the legal steps of this procedure.

According to CRJM, within 15 days of the vacancy of the position, CSP shall announce the competition for selecting a new chief prosecutor. The competition takes place in two stages: the pre-selection of candidates by a special commission and the final selection carried out by the CSP. Information about the competition—conditions, eligibility criteria, and the deadline for submitting applications—will be made public on the CSP website.
The actual competition process stipulates that first, the special commission evaluates the files and interviews the candidates, determining whether they meet the legal requirements (professional experience, reputation, integrity, absence of any conflict of interest, etc.). Candidates declared eligible are then subjected to a second evaluation by the CSP, which interviews them in a public session.
Following these evaluations, the CSP selects the most suitable candidate and submits the proposal to the General Prosecutor, who can only reject the nomination if there are well-founded reasons, such as irrefutable evidence of incompatibility or serious procedural violations.
If the General Prosecutor accepts the candidacy, he issues an appointment order, and if the General Prosecutor justifiably rejects the candidacy, the CSP resumes the procedure or may propose the same candidate with the vote of 2/3 of its members, in which case the General Prosecutor shall sign the appointment.
We remind you that Veronica Dragalin announced on Wednesday, February 19, her intention to resign from the position of chief prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office.
