Pavel Postica discusses optimal date for parliamentary elections

The parliamentary elections can be scheduled, in accordance with the law, between mid-July and early October, according to the Vice President of the Central Electoral Commission (CEC), Pavel Postica, on Rlive.

He stated that, to allow the institution he represents to better prepare for the election, it would be preferable to hold the elections in October.

"After each election, certain shortcomings are identified, including legal ambiguities—issues that may be unclear, open to interpretation, and requiring adjustments. Traditionally, after each election, the CEC holds a post-election conference to review key shortcomings and propose legislative amendments. This year, we are holding the post-election conference after the presidential elections and national referendum, on March 18-19. Around that time, we may also propose legislative amendments," said Pavel Postica.

Previously, Pavel Postica stated on the "Public Space" program on Radio Moldova that, in past elections, observers noted irregularities in changes to the Electoral Code made during the campaign. To avoid such criticism, elections should be held no later than autumn, allowing lawmakers enough time to finalize legislative amendments.

He also mentioned that a draft law, currently set for a second reading in Parliament, addresses both changes to the Electoral Code and regulations concerning political parties.

The current legislature’s mandate will expire on July 26, 2025, exactly four years after its formation. Parliamentary elections must take place within three months of this date, meaning no later than October 26, as required by the Electoral Code. The exact election date will be determined by the sitting Parliament at least 70 days before the vote.
