Jānis Mažeiks on justice reform in the Republic of Moldova: "We expected it would not be an easy process. What has been achieved so far is good."

The European Union is reviewing the draft law on the creation of the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office and Fight Against Organized Crime and hopes that the initiative will also be submitted to the Venice Commission, whose expertise is an important reference point, stated the Ambassador of the European Union to Chișinău, Jānis Mažeiks, in a TV8 broadcast. The diplomat appreciated that the draft was consulted before being voted on in the first reading and emphasized the importance of continuing the consultation process.

Speaking about justice reform, Ambassador Mažeiks stated that it is progressing as expected by the European Union.

"We expected it would not be an easy process. What has been achieved so far is good. Now, it is important to complete the vetting process. It is advancing, but it is a complex one," the European diplomat said.

Ambassador Jānis Mažeiks pointed out that the vetting process was impacted by the United States' decision to halt external funding. However, the European Union found a solution by taking on the costs, including those for the prosecutors' vetting, which were previously covered by U.S. funding.
