Zelensky and Trump confrontation at the White House over peace talks

After the meeting on Friday between Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump at the White House, President Maia Sandu posted on social media that Ukraine is defending its freedom — and ours.

"The truth is simple. Russia invaded Ukraine. Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine is defending its freedom — and ours. We stand with Ukraine," wrote President Maia Sandu on X (formerly Twitter).

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not apologize for the heated exchange with President Donald Trump that took place on Friday in the Oval Office, in front of the media. He stated in an interview with Fox News that he is confident their relationship can be saved, but he did not apologize.

U.S. Senator Marco Rubio, on the other hand, argued that Zelensky should apologize and explained what "triggered" the exchange. When asked about the heated exchange at the White House, the leader from Kyiv said he "wasn't sure if he had done anything wrong," but acknowledged that the exchange was "bad for both sides." In the Fox News interview, Zelensky emphasized that it would be "difficult" for Kyiv to win the war or fend off Russia without U.S. help.

The visit took place after weeks of tense negotiations. Ukraine rejected two initial proposal drafts, stating that these imposed unilateral obligations on Kyiv without security commitments from Washington.

The meeting ended without an agreement after a 45-minute briefing between Zelensky and Trump turned heated over U.S. aid to Ukraine and the terms of a potential peace agreement with Russia.

After the talks, Trump declared that Zelensky "is not ready for peace" and accused him of disrespecting the U.S. in the Oval Office.

"He can come back when he's ready for peace," Trump posted on Truth Social.

Zelensky left the White House earlier than expected, without signing a mineral agreement with the United States, after a heated exchange with Trump.
