Romania supports Moldova's European integration and security

European integration is the only path that can provide sustainable solutions to the challenges facing the Republic of Moldova, interim President of Romania Ilie Bolojan declared during a press conference alongside President Maia Sandu.

The Romanian official further emphasized that Russia’s war in Ukraine continues to pose significant challenges for Moldova, while Romania and its European partners remain fully committed to offering support in this regard.

"The Republic of Moldova has been profoundly affected and must strengthen its security to protect its citizens. Moldova does not stand alone in facing these challenges. Romania, along with numerous international partners, fully supports Moldova’s goal of enhancing its resilience and security. In addition to the war at its borders, Moldova is also dealing with the frozen conflict in the Transnistrian region. Romania backs a comprehensive, peaceful, and enduring resolution to the Transnistrian conflict—one that respects Moldova’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders and safeguards its pro-European future," Ilie Bolojan stated.

The interim Romanian president also highlighted that the European Union and Moldova’s European partners will assist in addressing current energy sector challenges. "Romania plays a crucial role in these efforts, and the Romanian government will continue regulating the price of a significant share of the electricity supplied to Moldova by Romanian producers. Additionally, we remain committed to strengthening energy interconnection between our two countries," Bolojan affirmed.

He further stressed that "2025 will be a pivotal year for both Romania and Moldova, given the upcoming elections. Wise management of internal challenges is crucial, as is maintaining continuity in the European path of reforms. We have committed to strengthening our joint efforts, promoting initiatives to combat disinformation, and enhancing strategic communication," the Romanian official stated.

For her part, President Maia Sandu acknowledged that both countries are navigating difficult times due to attempts at destabilization, hybrid attacks, and electoral corruption.

"Mr. President, we share a common responsibility—to safeguard peace and freedom, to ensure a secure and prosperous future for our people, and to reinforce their confidence that their work, hopes, and choices will not be undermined. In the face of today’s challenges—whether in security, the economy, or the defense of democracy—we know we can count on each other. Through solidarity and decisive action, we will overcome obstacles, protect our values, and build a stable and prosperous future for our citizens," Maia Sandu declared.

Interim Romanian President Ilie Bolojan is paying an official visit to Chișinău on Saturday, March 1, at the invitation of President Maia Sandu. He arrived in the Moldovan capital this morning and was welcomed at the Presidency with military honors.
