German flight cancellations: Verdi strike impacts travel

Chișinău International Airport representatives announced that several flights to and from Germany have been canceled due to a 24-hour strike set to disrupt major airports across the country on Monday, March 10th.

Affected airports include major air hubs such as Frankfurt and Munich, as well as Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Bremen, Hamburg, and Berlin.

Passengers are strongly advised to check their flight status on the airport's website and contact their airline for further information and alternative options.

AIC representatives also noted that numerous flights to Frankfurt have already been canceled, urging travelers to inquire about rescheduling options well in advance.

It's important to note that over half a million passengers will be affected, with thousands of flights grounded due to this 24-hour strike at major German airports. The strike follows calls from the Verdi union for public sector and ground handling service employees to strike, as reported by Reuters.

The German Airports Association (ADV) stated that approximately 510,000 people will be affected, and over 3,400 flights will be canceled as a result of the strike, marking a significant escalation after Verdi organized several labor actions last month.

The union, demanding an 8% pay increase or at least an additional 350 euros per month, decided to call a warning strike after a second round of collective bargaining talks failed last month. Employers have rejected the demands as unfeasible. Negotiations are set to resume later this month.
