Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff heads to Moscow for ceasefire talks

Steve Witkoff, a trusted envoy of the U.S. President Donald Trump, will visit Moscow this week to discuss a potential ceasefire agreement in Ukraine with Russian officials, according to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, as reported by AFP and Agerpres.

The U.S. administration seeks to pressure Russia into accepting a 30-day ceasefire, previously negotiated between the United States and Ukraine in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, U.S. National Security Advisor Mike Walz spoke with his Russian counterpart on Wednesday in an effort to advance the agreement.

President Donald Trump expressed hope that Vladimir Putin would accept the proposal but did not provide details on any potential pressure applied to the Kremlin. “Our negotiators are already en route to Russia to obtain approval for the ceasefire proposal,” said the U.S. president.

Steve Witkoff, known for his role in Middle East negotiations, met with Vladimir Putin in February, where he successfully negotiated the release of an American citizen detained in Russia. His visit to Moscow has been regarded as a key step in diplomatic efforts to ease tensions in Ukraine.
