Tennis upsets: Bencic stuns Gauff at Indian Wells

The American, the No. 3 seed, lost to Swiss player Belinda Bencic. Aryna Sabalenka, the tournament's top seed, cruised into the quarterfinals.

Coco Gauff suffered a surprise early exit at Indian Wells. The American was defeated by Belinda Bencic in the round of 16. Gauff lost the match in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 4-6, in 2 hours and 21 minutes of play. Gauff is in poor form, having lost four of her last six matches.

Meanwhile, Belinda Bencic, ranked No. 58 in the world, reached her second WTA quarterfinal of the year. She previously achieved this in Abu Dhabi, where she won the title.

Bencic will face Madison Keys, this year's Australian Open champion, in the next round. Keys herself defeated Croatian Donna Vekic, 4-6, 7-6, 6-3. Keys secured her 15th consecutive win.

Aryna Sabalenka advanced to the quarterfinals with a win over British player Sonay Kartal. The top seed at Indian Wells won in two sets, 6-1, 6-2.

In the men's singles, Carlos Alcaraz eliminated Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov. The Spaniard cruised to a straight-sets victory, 6-1, 6-1. Alcaraz will play against Argentinian Francisco Cerundolo in the quarterfinals.

American Taylor Fritz, last year's US Open runner-up, was eliminated in the round of 16 at Indian Wells by Jack Draper. The Briton prevailed in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4.
