Moldova aims for energy independence by 2030
The Government has approved the Action Plan to strengthen Moldova's energy independence.

The document provides for major investments in infrastructure, increasing local electricity production capacity, including from renewable sources, creating natural gas and oil reserves, and integrating energy markets with the European Union by 2030.
According to the Government, the Plan aims to eliminate dependence on energy supplies from Russia, in both the electricity and natural gas and oil sectors. This objective was undertaken by signing the Letter of Intent between the Government of Moldova and the European Commission on February 4, 2025.
The Plan includes:
- Building the 400 kV Vulcănești Chișinău interconnection power line by 2025 and starting construction on the Bălți-Suceava line by 2027;
- Implementing 55 MW high-performance power plants and commissioning a 125 MW gas turbine by 2027;
- Diversifying gas and electricity supplies, including through EU imports and renewable energy development;
- Establishing a natural gas storage system equivalent to 15% of annual consumption by 2030;
- Launching the organized electricity market in 2025 and integrating it with the EU by 2027.
According to the Minister of Energy, Dorin Junghietu, the European Union will provide financial support for these reforms, with assistance of up to 250 million euros in 2025.
