Canada challenges US steel tariffs at WTO

Canada has filed a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States, challenging the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on Canadian steel and aluminum imports, Reuters reports.
The source indicates that Canada has requested formal consultations under the trade dispute settlement mechanism.
President Donald Trump announced the 25% tariffs on steel and 10% tariffs on aluminum in early March as part of a protectionist trade strategy, which triggered strong reactions from international partners.
In response, Canada announced retaliatory tariffs worth 29.8 billion Canadian dollars on select American products, including steel, aluminum, IT equipment, and consumer goods.
Furthermore, the Canadian government has stepped up discussions with the European Union and Mexico to coordinate a joint trade response to the measures imposed by Washington. Officials in Ottawa have warned that these new tariffs could negatively impact the North American economy, disrupting supply chains and driving up prices for essential goods.
