Gagauzia assembly considers Executive Committee resignation

The deputies of the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia may discuss the resignation of the Executive Committee at their next meeting, dissatisfied with its refusal to support proposed legislative initiatives, including an increase in the Fund for Supporting Children Needing Expensive Surgical Interventions, reports IPN.

The Fund was established in 2016, and local authorities allocate approximately one million lei each year.

This year, the deputies voted to supplement the fund by two million lei, but the Executive Committee rejected the proposal. Deputy Ilya Uzun stated that "the executive body had presented the deputies with a proposal to increase the fund by 50 percent" and that "severely ill children are receiving help due to the cooperation between the Executive Committee and the Eurasia Foundation (which collaborates with the fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor)." However, there is no clear information regarding the foundation's contribution to financing the interventions.

The deputies' dissatisfaction also extends to other issues. They reminded that "the fugitive oligarch Ilan Șor, definitively convicted of bank fraud, promised a 'dreamland' and investments of 500 million euros in Gagauzia, but instead, he is blocking even what could be achieved with budgetary funds."

Deputy Alexandru Tarnavschi described the Executive Committee as "dysfunctional" and announced he would prepare "a list of violations that would make it possible to discuss the dismissal of the Executive Committee, or else, he says, 'the situation will worsen day by day.'"

It is worth mentioning that, in October 2023, the People’s Assembly approved the Executive Committee's program, which was based on Ilan Șor's promises. This included the construction of an airport, the creation of 7,000 jobs, reductions in gas and electricity tariffs, as well as increases in pensions and salaries.

It should also be noted that, after several failed attempts, in the two months following the election of the Bashkan, the People’s Assembly of Comrat succeeded in appointing the new composition of the Executive Committee. Of the 31 local deputies present at the meeting, 20 voted in favor of the Executive proposed by the Bashkan.
