A new methodology for calculating fares for public transport services could be adopted in order to modernize the system and make it more accessible to passengers.

The last update was made in 2007 and no longer meets current requirements, stated Mircea Păscăluță, State Secretary of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Regional Development, in an interview with Radio Moldova.

The initiative is currently in the public consultation stage, and on Monday, it was discussed with transport operators. Last week, they warned that they might protest if fare adjustments were not made and requested meetings with government representatives.

With external assistance, we have developed a draft methodology with support from GIZ, the German government’s development agency, and this methodology is now ready to be submitted for public consultation. Discussions were held, and stakeholders expressed their views.

During Monday’s consultations, additional topics were discussed, including the methodology for setting fares, the indicators used in fare calculations, and their implementation by the National Road Transport Agency and district councils.

The proposed resolution aims to bring several benefits, including fair and realistic fares that accurately reflect transport costs and improvements in transport conditions through investments in modernizing the fleet.

Additionally, authorities will ensure the correct implementation of fare regulations, protecting passengers from abuses or unjustified price increases.
