Russia has inflicted suffering on millions of Ukrainian children, violating their rights since the start of the invasion of Ukraine in 2022, according to a new report published on Friday by the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, as reported by Reuters.

“Ukrainian children's rights have been systematically violated in every aspect of their lives, leaving profound physical and psychological scars,” said UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk.

Some children were coerced into attending so-called military-patriotic training, which included singing the Russian national anthem and following the Russian school curriculum, in violation of international humanitarian law. The deportation of children to Russia and Russian-occupied Ukrainian territories between February 2022 and December 2024 may constitute war crimes, the report states.

Moscow has previously claimed that it was protecting vulnerable children from a war zone.

Ukraine has stated that the forced removal of tens of thousands of children who were taken to Russia or Russian-occupied territory without their families' consent meets the definition of genocide under the UN treaty.

In March 2023, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants for Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russia’s Commissioner for Children's Rights, Maria Lvova-Belova, in connection with the abduction of Ukrainian children.

More than 600 children have been killed between February 24, 2022, and December 31, 2024, in Ukraine, including in occupied territories, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.
