Children’s Ombudsman to investigate three tragic cases in Moldova

The Children’s Ombudsman has taken note of three serious incidents that have recently emerged in the media, sparking public concern.

These incidents include the death of a 9-year-old girl who fell into a drainage ditch, a 16-year-old adolescent who fell from a hospital floor, and a 15-year-old boy who allegedly took his life following a reported incident at school. The Children’s Ombudsman has announced that it will closely monitor the authorities’ actions and verify whether appropriate measures were taken to protect children and prevent future tragedies.

The first case involves the tragic death of a 9-year-old girl, who fell into a drainage ditch. The institution has drawn attention to the risks associated with public infrastructure and is calling for urgent measures to ensure children's safety in public spaces, in line with the right to life, survival, and development, as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The second case concerns a 16-year-old adolescent who fell from a height inside the Mother and Child Institute. The Ombudsman is calling for a comprehensive and transparent investigation, as well as an evaluation of the infrastructure and safety measures in healthcare institutions, emphasizing their responsibility to provide a safe and secure environment for children.

The third case involves a 15-year-old adolescent who allegedly took his life following a reported incident at school. The Children’s Ombudsman stresses the need for thorough investigations and reiterates the importance of strengthening mechanisms to identify and intervene in cases of psychosocial vulnerability in children.
