Dozens of people gathered in front of the Moldovan Embassy in Moscow to protest the detention of the Bashkan of Gagauzia, Evghenia Guțul. The action, organized by representatives of the Moldovan and Gagauz diaspora, was authorized by the Russian authorities.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Chisinau reacted to the protest in Moscow, stating that “Moldovans are teaching the Russians the culture of protest” and noted that this is “the only demonstration permitted by the Russian authorities”.
Meanwhile, protests were staged in the Republic of Moldova. At the Buiucani Court in Chisinau, several supporters of Evghenia Guțul gathered before the hearing in which the prosecutors’ request to extend her pre-trial detention by 30 days is to be examined. Moreover, in the town of Ceadir-Lunga, locals protested in front of the city hall, and police blocked the entrance to the building to maintain public order.
Evghenia Guțul was detained on Tuesday, March 25, for 72 hours, at Chisinau Airport, while she was trying to leave the country. She is accused of instigating and organizing, through the treasurer, the falsification of several documents, which led to the replenishment of the electoral competitor's bank account with illegal means of 370 thousand lei, which were later used to purchase goods and pay taxes and services related to the electoral campaign.
