Elon Musk's xAI acquires Twitter for $33 billion

American entrepreneur Elon Musk announced that his company, xAI, which specializes in artificial intelligence (AI), has acquired the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), which he also owns, for $33 billion.

According to Musk, following the transaction, “xAI’s valuation will be $80 billion, while X will be worth $33 billion ($45 billion minus a $12 billion debt).”

“The future of xAI and X is deeply interconnected. Today, we are officially taking a step toward integrating data, models, computational resources, distribution channels, and expertise,” the entrepreneur added.

Representatives of X and xAI did not respond to journalists' inquiries, Reuters reported, noting that many aspects of the transaction remain unclear, particularly how investors will be compensated and how X’s current leadership will be incorporated into the new structure.

One of xAI’s investors told Reuters that Elon Musk did not consult them before the merger. Musk merely stated that the two companies had already been working closely together and that the merger would allow for deeper integration with Grok, xAI’s artificial intelligence system.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, took ownership of Twitter in October 2022 after acquiring the social media platform for $44 billion. Musk stated that he intended to overhaul the company, which he deemed unprofitable, and that he envisioned developing an “everything app” called X. In April 2023, another of his companies, X Corp., merged with Twitter, which was later rebranded as X.
