Syria's interim government announced with a focus on reconstruction and stability

On Saturday, March 29, Syria's interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, announced the composition of the country's new government, according to AFP.

The cabinet formed, which al-Sharaa called the "government of reconstruction and change," includes just one woman. Most of the positions were given to allies of the interim president, according to DW.

Hind Kabawat, a representative of the Christian minority and a prominent opponent of Bashar al-Assad's regime, was appointed to head the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor. The foreign and defense ministers retained their positions, which they had held during the transitional period under al-Sharaa's leadership.

The interim leader emphasized that the new government's main priorities are Syria's reconstruction, building a strong and stable state to protect the interests of both the nation and its citizens, as well as tackling corruption, strengthening the army, and bolstering the economy.

In December 2024, Islamist forces, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group, overthrew Bashar al-Assad's regime. In March 2025, the new authorities launched a large-scale military operation in Latakia, Tartus, Hama, and Homs against those deemed supporters of the former president, after they revolted and attacked government forces.

Human rights organizations report that around 1,500 civilians were killed during the violent repression of the revolt, the majority of whom were from the Alawite community. Thousands more sought refuge at the Russian airbase in Hmeimim.

On March 10, Syria's transitional government announced the end of its military operation against Assad's supporters in western Syria — a move that human rights activists have called a "slaughter." Syrian authorities have stated they are investigating cases of violence.

During a visit to Syria, Germany's Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock described the deliberate killing of civilians as "a grave crime" and called on the interim government to hold those responsible accountable.
