Court rejects the request for preventive detention against Evghenia Guțul

The magistrates of the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani rejected the request for preventive arrest for 30 days on behalf of Evghenia Guțul submitted by the anti-corruption prosecutors. In justifying its decision, the panel of judges referred to the provisions of Articles 175, 176 and 342 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

Under these provisions, the court ruled: “The request of the anti-corruption prosecutors Ghenadie Epure and Cristina Gladcov regarding the application of the preventive measure of preventive arrest for 30 days concerning the defendant Guțul is rejected as inadmissible”.

“The conclusion with the right of appeal to the Chisinau Court of Appeal can be challenged within three days through the Chisinau Court based in Buiucani,” reads the judges’ decision.

Protests in support of Bashkan Evghenia Guțul, while prosecutors request a new 30-day pre-trial detention warrant

Dozens of residents of the Gagauz autonomy took to the streets today for a new protest, demanding the release of the Bashkan Evghenia Guțul and accusing the central authorities of abuse. The demonstrators claim that her detention is illegal and politically motivated. In the meantime, Evghenia Guțul is due to appear again before magistrates at the Buiucani Court, where anti-corruption prosecutors are requesting her placement in preventive detention for 30 days.

According to the accusers, Guțul was allegedly involved in the illegal introduction of large sums of money from the Russian Federation, which was allegedly used to support the activities of the former “Sor” Party and to finance the protests organized by it.

We recall that Evghenia Guțul was detained on Tuesday, March 25, at Chișinău International Airport while she was trying to leave the territory of the Republic of Moldova. Law enforcement officials claim that the Bashkan tried to evade criminal prosecution.

On March 28, Bashkan was placed in pretrial detention for 20 days in another case, being accused of fraudulent management of electoral funds, illegal financing, and falsification of documents to support her electoral campaign. Evghenia Guțul rejects the charges and does not plead guilty. Also, she appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene for her release.
