Mihai Popșoi at the Atlantic Council: The legitimate aspiration of our people is integration into the EU

The progress made by the Republic of Moldova in its European path, the strengthening of the strategic partnership with the US, support for Ukraine and our country's achievements in several key areas were the main topics addressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Moldova, Mihai Popșoi, during a public debate organized by the Atlantic Council. During the event, the Deputy Prime Minister reaffirmed our country's firm commitment to integration into the EU and strengthening relations with international partners, especially with the US.

The Deputy Prime Minister also spoke about the substantial support of the European Union, which recently allocated 1.9 billion euros for Moldova.

This support is managed transparently, and its impact is seen in infrastructure, education, energy security and cybersecurity. All of this keeps Moldova firmly anchored on the European path.

Popșoi highlighted the progress made by Moldova in terms of energy independence, noting that the country is no longer dependent on Gazprom due to the diversification of energy sources and the increase in the share of renewable energy.

Today, we reaffirmed our sovereignty, we maintain stability in the Transnistrian region, even in the face of an artificial crisis generated by the Kremlin in January, when gas supplies to the region were arbitrarily interrupted. Moldovan society resisted, and our citizens sent a clear message: the legitimate aspiration of our people is integration into the European Union.

In his speech, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the importance of collaboration with the United States, noting the progress made in the field of security and combating organized crime, through investments in the border police and intelligence services. He also appreciated the “peace through strength” policy promoted by the Trump administration, considering it essential in the face of Russian aggression.

Popșoi also reaffirmed the Republic of Moldova’s support for Ukraine, emphasizing that our country is actively involved in the reconstruction process and will continue to support Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.

Ukraine is not only defending itself, but it is also defending the Republic of Moldova. We look forward to a just and lasting peace in Ukraine, in the interests of the Ukrainian people – courageous people, who have demonstrated to the whole world that they can withstand not just three days, as some estimated at the beginning of the war, but for more than three years.

Also, Mihai Popșoi thanked the American people for the support provided to the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine.

Any aid for Moldova is aid for Ukraine, and any support for Ukraine is support for Moldova. The Republic of Moldova will stand by Ukraine. The Republic of Moldova will stand by the United States.

We remind you that the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mihai Popșoi is on a working visit to the US between March 29 and April 6.
