Romanian-language schools in the Transnistrian region are the target of a smear campaign in the media controlled by Tiraspol, Promo-LEX

The media controlled by the Transnistrian structures and the Sheriff holding company launched a new media campaign against schools teaching in Romanian in the Transnistrian region, in the context of the introduction of the new version of the history textbook for grade 12, according to the "Promo-LEX" association.

Experts note that, although Tiraspol is apparently open to discussions on the return of the premises of the “Evrika” Lyceum in Râbnița, it is simultaneously conducting a hostile media campaign, labelling Romanian-language schools as instruments of “rehabilitation of Nazism”. The alleged leader of Tiraspol, Vadim Krasnoselski, is the main promoter of narratives in this regard.

According to the association, this fake rhetoric is also promoted by the Kremlin-controlled media regarding history textbooks in Ukrainian schools, with the aim of supporting the thesis of “denazification”, used as a pretext for the Russian invasion. These propaganda tactics aim to legitimise, among the domestic and foreign public, aggressive actions against states that affirm their national and European identity, say human rights defenders.

Lawyers emphasize that this media campaign conducted by the Tiraspol-controlled media and supported by the Sheriff holding against Romanian-language schools represents a serious threat to the right to education and fundamental freedoms.

The authorities in Chisinau, as well as international partners, must continue to monitor the situation and take concrete measures to guarantee the security and autonomy of educational institutions in the Transnistrian region, recommend representatives of the Promo-LEX association.
