Moldovan universities set for major renovations in 2025

Several universities across Moldova are set to undergo extensive renovations next year.

This modernization initiative includes the digitization of academic processes, as well as the refurbishment of classrooms, lecture halls, and student dormitories, many of which are currently in poor or unusable condition.

The project will be funded by 17 million lei (~€870,000) allocated by the Ministry of Education and Research, which will be distributed to six universities that have applied for the project.

More than three million lei (~€150,000) will be designated for Moldova State University to repair dormitories and renovate facilities, including the locker rooms at the swimming pool and additional student housing.

Dormitory No. 1 is scheduled for renovation, with new windows already installed and plans to repair the roof. Dormitory No. 2 will be completely rebuilt.

"We are focusing on modernizing dormitories that previously offered substandard living conditions. Dormitory No. 2, in particular, is undergoing full reconstruction. Only the exterior walls remain, and the interior will feature a new design tailored to the comfort and living standards of students," said Otilia Dandara, Vice-Rector of Moldova State University.

Students residing in the dormitories have expressed their satisfaction with the upcoming renovations, citing the need for improvements in bathrooms, kitchens, and furniture.

"I spent three of the last four years living in Dormitory No. 2, where the conditions were not great. However, I’m excited that renovations are underway, and I would happily return next year," one student said.

"As a dorm resident, I noticed the need for bathroom renovations, and the kitchen needs to be equipped with new furniture," another student added.

The Technical University of Moldova will receive four million lei for the renovation of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, computers and tablets will be purchased for study programs in Animation and Game Design, equipped to meet the necessary software requirements.

“We plan to fully renovate two 150-seat lecture halls and several other spaces, which will also house computer labs and a digital innovation hub,” said Viorel Bostan, Rector of the Technical University of Moldova.

The wing housing the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has been unused for the past five years due to its poor condition, and students are eager for its reopening.

“A larger, more modern lecture hall and improved conditions will make studying much more enjoyable when the space is clean and renovated,” a student from the faculty commented.

“These spaces are crucial for us, especially as our student numbers continue to grow,” another student added.

In addition to Moldova State University, other institutions benefiting from this investment include Ion Creangă State Pedagogical University, Alecu Russo State University in Bălți, Comrat State University, and the Academy of Economic Studies of Moldova.
