Why Moldova’s 2009 protests remain unresolved after 16 years

Authorities will be unable to prove the involvement of those responsible for escalating the initially peaceful protests of April 2009.
This opinion was expressed by Alexandru Tănase, the former Minister of Justice and former President of the Constitutional Court, during the 'Pe față' program on Moldova 1. According to him, many pieces of evidence were concealed, and the events of 16 years ago will most likely remain unresolved, largely because public interest has faded.
"We will never be able to prove publicly the involvement of those who participated in those events. Although I was not a participant, I was involved in the legal procedures, gave statements, and identified individuals involved in those events, but nothing came of it. The case was deliberately concealed," Tănase stated during the program.
Sixteen years later, many questions remain unanswered. The lack of progress in clarifying the events of April 7, 2009, is largely due to the current disinterest of the public, according to the former Minister. "Why did those events unfold? How did the police respond? Why didn’t they act when they should have? Where did the criminals who spoke Russian come from, and who were the instigators of the destruction? It wasn’t the children who were beaten by the police. To this day, it remains unclear who gave the order to beat those children, including causing their deaths. Many things remain exactly where they were left on April 7, 2009, with no progress in uncovering the truth. And most likely, there will be no progress, because the public is no longer interested," he added.
The promises made to the public after 2009 have also not been fulfilled. "The public was lulled with all sorts of nonsense about monuments for the victims being built in front of Parliament. No monument was ever built for any of the victims. Everyone involved in this situation knew how to manage it and let it fade into oblivion. Now, who even knows if the cases are still at the Prosecutor's Office or if anyone is even examining them?" Tănase said.
Today marks 16 years since the violent protests of April 7, 2009. Over the years, authorities have assured the public that they would uncover the truth about what happened on that day, yet to this day, no one has been held accountable for the abuses committed during the protests.
