U.S. ambassador to Ukraine plans early resignation

Bridget Brink, the U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine, plans to step down before completing her term, the BBC reports.

“Ambassador Brink is stepping down. She’s served for three years — a lengthy tenure in a conflict zone. And frankly, the war has dragged on for far too long,” a State Department spokesperson said in a statement.

CBS News reports that while Brink has not yet formally submitted her resignation, she has already begun bidding farewell to colleagues.

A senior U.S. official told CBS that her decision is driven by “an unusual mix of personal and political reasons,” including “recent shake-ups at USAID” and the fact that she is “serving in a conflict zone, far from her family.”

Secretary of State Marco Rubio reportedly rejected her resignation when she first submitted it in January and had intended to keep her in the role, CBS adds.

According to G4media, it remains unclear who will succeed Brink as the next U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.
