Danu Secrieru wins three medals at European weightlifting championships

At only 17 years old, Moldovan weightlifter Danu Secrieru has captured the spotlight with a stellar showing at the European Senior Championships, held at the Chișinău Arena in the capital of the Republic of Moldova.
Secrieru won three medals across different events, making an impressive debut at the senior level.
Competing in the 55 kg weight class, the athlete from Ungheni finished third in the snatch event, earning the bronze medal with a best lift of 110 kilograms. The gold medal went to Turkey’s Harun Algul, while Romania’s Cristian Marian Luca took silver.
Secrieru also turned heads in the clean and jerk. Although he was a strong contender for the gold, he was ultimately edged out by Bulgaria’s Angel Rusev. Secrieru lifted a maximum of 135 kilograms, while Rusev managed 141 kilograms to secure first place.
Georgia’s Ramini Shamilishvili took third place in the clean and jerk. With a combined total of 245 kilograms, Secrieru secured second place in the overall standings, narrowly missing the top spot by just one kilogram. The European champion title went to Angel Rusev, who totaled 246 kilograms, with Shamilishvili completing the podium.
The five medalists were awarded by Olympic legend Tudor Casapu, Moldova’s gold medalist from the 1992 Barcelona Games.
Having excelled as a junior, Secrieru is now making his mark among senior-level athletes, showcasing the promise of a bright future in international weightlifting.
