Romanian Easter traditions revived in Soroca workshop

To help preserve and share Romania’s authentic Easter traditions, the Nicolae Bulat History Museum in Soroca organized a special workshop focused on traditional egg decorating.

The event brought together children and young people eager to discover traditional crafts, guided by skilled folk artists and master artisans.

Participants had the opportunity to hand-decorate eggs using vibrant colors and traditional Romanian motifs, while also exploring more intricate techniques such as raised designs and wax-resist patterns. More than just a practical lesson in folk art, the workshop was also a meaningful way to engage with Romanian cultural values, said event organizer Ludmila Prepeliță, who has been introducing younger generations to the art of egg decorating for many years.
"I first tried it at home with my granddaughters. When I saw it went well, I brought the activity into the classroom. I worked with students and even held masterclasses for teachers,” shared folk artist Ludmila Prepeliță.

The workshop offered a chance to practice traditional decorating techniques and explore the meaning behind ornamental patterns and symbols.
"At home, we also decorate eggs with our grandmother. All of us granddaughters gather with our parents, and we decorate eggs together," one young participant said.

"I love having the most beautiful Easter eggs, and I’m really proud that I can make them myself," added another.

"I’ve been using this decorating technique for a while now. Today, I started with what I call the ‘line of life’ and the ‘line of death.’ I also added a cross and a flower.”
“If you study these decorated eggs closely,” explained Tamara Coșciug, senior specialist at the Soroca Department of Culture and Tourism, “you’ll find design elements inspired by cămașa cu altiță, the traditional Romanian blouse worn by our ancestors.”
As Easter approaches, the Soroca History Museum traditionally opens its doors to all who want to learn the ancient and meaningful art of egg decorating.
