The Republic of Moldova may receive air defense systems, confirms Defense Minister amid talks with European partners

The Republic of Moldova will most likely receive air defense systems based on non-refundable aid, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatîi said. According to the official, the process is in an advanced phase of discussions, and the final decision is expected in the coming days.
"It is currently under discussion and has not yet been approved. A final decision is expected in the coming days," said Minister Nosatîi, who emphasized that protecting citizens and ensuring airspace security are top priorities for the Ministry of Defense.
The minister clarified that the new systems will serve to intercept and destroy objects that illegally enter the airspace of the Republic of Moldova. He dismissed rumors suggesting that the government plans to borrow money to purchase this equipment.
“Air defense remains a priority,” the minister added, noting that these new systems would enhance existing airspace monitoring capabilities.
According to a document obtained by Radio Free Europe, the European Union is set to approve a new military assistance package for the Republic of Moldova, valued at 20 million euros. This funding is intended to provide eight short-range air defense systems, each equipped with launchers and 24 missiles.
The delivery will be coordinated by the Estonian Center for Defense Investment. We remind you that the total amount granted to the Republic of Moldova through the European Peace Facility has reached 197 million euros from 2021 to the present.
Security analysts believe that EU support is crucial for strengthening the Republic of Moldova's defense capabilities. They emphasize that this is not about militarizing the country but rather a legitimate protective measure against the increasing risks to air security. In their view, EU support effectively addresses the shortcomings of the current defense system and responds to the urgent need to modernize military infrastructure. Experts also state that the EU is increasingly taking on the role of a security guarantor in the region, acting concretely through strategic investments.
The assistance aims to replace outdated Soviet equipment and align the Moldovan armed forces with European standards. Currently, the Republic of Moldova has only one modern radar system, the Ground Master 200, which was purchased from France in 2023.
Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the airspace of the Republic of Moldova has been violated multiple times, with fragments of drones and missiles discovered in localities across the north and south of the country, including areas near schools and hospitals.
