Upcoming parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova draw EU scrutiny

The European Union is increasing its support for the Republic of Moldova ahead of the parliamentary elections in 2025. A delegation from the European Parliament's Committee on Security and Defense, visiting Chișinău, highlighted the risks of external interference in the electoral process. Members of the European Parliament announced that European observers will monitor the elections.
“There will certainly be a delegation, as has happened in the past, to monitor the elections in the Republic of Moldova. I have had several meetings with the secret services of the Republic of Moldova. So, judging by what we have seen here in the past, the chances that the elections will not be subject to any interference are close to zero. Therefore, it is likely that this will happen again, and the fact that the Republic of Moldova is ready to react to such an attack is a positive thing”, said MEP Andrei Novakov.
In the context of the parliamentary elections, the head of the Security and Defence Committee of the European Parliament, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, highlighted the role of the European Union Partnership Mission in the Republic of Moldova.
This mission aims to strengthen the resilience of the Republic of Moldova in the face of hybrid threats. It will play a key role in supporting the Moldovan authorities in countering Russian interference, especially given the 2025 parliamentary elections.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean had a discussion on Wednesday with representatives of anti-corruption and organized crime institutions, during which he signaled the danger of electoral corruption, noting that this phenomenon represents “a national vulnerability that harms the entire society and even national security”.
Parliamentary elections could be organized on September 28. A draft resolution to this effect was registered in Parliament on Wednesday by deputies of the Action and Solidarity Party (PAS). Under the provisions of the Electoral Code and the Constitution, parliamentary elections in the Republic of Moldova must be organized no later than the first half of October 2025.
