Man Utd's stunning 5-4 win highlights Europa League drama
The two periods of extra time were a real spectacle. Manchester United were trailing 2-4 but made a miraculous comeback to win 5-4.
In the first leg, the two teams drew 2-2. The same scenario unfolded in the return match at Old Trafford. Manchester United started strongly, taking a 2-0 lead with goals from Ugarte and Dalot. However, the English side lost momentum after halftime, and the French team came back in the second half, scoring twice through Tolisso and Tagliafico.
This led to extra time, but not before Lyon had a player sent off. In the 89th minute, Tolisso received a second yellow card. Despite this, the French team managed to score twice in extra time through Cherki in the final minute of the first extra period and Lacazette from a penalty five minutes later. It was an ending for the ages. Manchester United then scored three times in just seven minutes.
Bruno Fernandes reduced the deficit with a penalty, and Kobe Mainoo equalized. Harry Maguire then snatched victory and qualification with a goal.
Manchester United will play the surprise package Bodo/Glimt in the semi-finals. The Norwegian team knocked out Lazio Roma on penalties after winning the first leg 2-0. They were trailing 0-3 in extra time at the Stadio Olimpico but salvaged the tie with a goal in the 110th minute.
The other Europa League semi-final will see Tottenham Hotspur face Athletic Bilbao. The English team eliminated Eintracht Frankfurt. Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, overcame Glasgow Rangers, winning the second leg 2-0 after the first match in Glasgow finished goalless.
Oihan Sancet scored the first goal of that match from a penalty in the first half, and Nico Williams doubled the home side's lead in the 82nd minute. The Europa League semi-final matches will be played on May 1st and 8th.
