Moldova boosts EU bid, gains support at Tirana summit

The Republic of Moldova and Albania have concluded a memorandum of cooperation. The document was signed in Tirana by Deputy Prime Minister for European Integration Cristina Gherasimov and Albania's Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Igli Hasani.

According to Cristina Gherasimov, the memorandum will facilitate the exchange of experience and best practices between institutions, closer cooperation in key areas, and leveraging technical expertise gained through negotiations.

The officials discussed the European agenda, the progress the two countries have made on the path towards the European Union, and how they can support each other.

"We have much to learn from each other. Together, we will arrive better prepared for the great European family. Moldova and Albania share the same aspiration – to become EU member states," Cristina Gherasimov stated.

President Maia Sandu participated in the European Political Community Summit held in Tirana on Friday. During the summit, the President hosted a meeting with the leaders of France, Italy, the United Kingdom, the President of the European Council, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. They, along with the leaders of Germany, Poland, and Romania, adopted a joint declaration reaffirming their firm support for the Republic of Moldova and their commitment to supporting our country in its economic development and European path.

Furthermore, the head of state also met with the leaders of Bulgaria, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Norway. Discussions focused on continued support for our country, the well-being of the people, and the next steps on our path towards the European Union. Also in Tirana, President Maia Sandu met with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenski.

The head of state will meet with the President of Albania, Bajram Begaj, today.
